What does the NEP 2020 mean for you?

On July 29, 2020, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal, Minister of the newly renamed Ministry of Education, released the New Education Policy 2020. This is the third Education policy of the country since independence and is a major step forward for the Indian education system as it brings a number of reforms in the existing curriculum that will bring about a positive change in the way children are educated in our country.

The vision and journey of NEP 2020

According to the MHRD (now renamed as Ministry of Education or MoE), The NEP 2020 aims to bring about an India-centred education system with a target to transform the way our future leaders are educated, and provide high-quality education to all.

As the first new education policy in 34 years, it has come about as a major change. The panel that submitted the first draft in 2018 was led by former ISRO chief, K. Kasturirangan. It was made public and open to feedback in May 2019.

School examinations

Assessment of the students will shift to a formative style encouraging - higher-order thinking skills, critical thinking, and conceptual clarity. The State will take examinations at three levels - classes 3, 5, and 8. The Board examinations will continue, however, they will now assess holistic development, and not encourage rote learning.

PARAKH - Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development will be established.

Higher Education:-

From the 2022 session, NTA will conduct a common college entrance exam twice a year.

A multiple entry-exit provision will be added to higher education. This will imply that a Bachelor’s degree will be of 4 years with exit options in the first two years.

UGC and AICTE will be merged. So far, no new body to replace the apex institutions in arts and sciences has been announced, but plans are being charted out for a single regulator of higher education.

IIT DELHI RELEASES POLICY FOR THE GRADUATING BATCH, 2020: OFFERS EARLY GRADUATION OPTION

An early graduation policy has been released by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi for the final year students. This policy ensures that due to the lockdown the future plans of the students do not get impacted. No student will need to come to the campus as the early education regulations will take place through an online process. However, the IITs senate ratified the policy and it can be subjected to change as per the COVID-19 situation unravels.

The students who are taking an early graduation option among them one is an audit pass or fail while another option is a credit option. As soon as the instructor post their regulations for an Audit pass grade instructor, the students will be instructed to exercise through an online portal. The instructor will declare the cut off for the audit pass-fail option, which is taking into account the COVID limitations.

The students who choose the early graduation option will take online tests take-home exams, assignments, for the credit option. As applicable they can also include telephonic viva-voice. For credit options, the grading policy procedure will be announced soon.

It is further mentioned in the notice that if in case any student is not able to complete early education regulations by the end of June with these options offered to them then the students will have a fallback option to graduate when the semester reconvenes. Moreover, this year the percentage of the pass and fail will be nearly the same as the last year.

24.6% GGSIPU STUDENTS ARE CURRENTLY OUTSIDE DELHI.Which acts as a barrier to offline exams.

Nearly 24.6% of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) students are currently not in Delhi due to the nationwide lockdown, found a survey by IPU Buzz.

The actual question that arises in mind is: “How are those students going to appear if the University opts for the offline mode of conducting exams?” Talking about the other mode of examinations – online.Several students across the University are facing poor internet connectivity issues which might pose a hindrance in case of online exams.

Most students outside Delhi have limited or no access to study material as they left it behind in Delhi. The unavailability of resources such as laptops and the internet is yet another issue faced by most students, especially the ones outside Delhi.

IIT Kanpur to pass all students basis their mid-terms, no end-term exams amid Covid19

In first-of-its-kind and a one-time exception, IIT Kanpur students will be awarded grades for their courses based on their performance in mid-semester exams. With this, IIT closes the current semester. It will consider all different kinds and aspects of evaluations conducted during the mid-term like quizzes, assignments, projects, and other performance indicators obtained through the online instruction during the suspension of the semester and as decided by the instructors of the course.

A unique grading scheme has been adopted by IIT Kanpur – only A, B, C, and S grades will be awarded, and more importantly, no student will fail. Considering the extraordinary disruption in the semester, including the summer term, the institute has decided to grant certain credit relaxations, as approved by the Senate, to the graduating batch to help the students graduate on time.

It is yet to be confirmed whether other IITs will follow suit or choose to conduct final exams as communicated earlier.

As a result, education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms.

Research suggests that online learning has been shown to increase retention of information, and take less time, meaning the changes coronavirus have caused might be here to stay.

With this sudden shift away from the classroom in many parts of the globe, some are wondering whether the adoption of online learning will continue to persist post-pandemic, and how such a shift would impact the worldwide education market

IT firms to continue hiring freshers despite coronavirus pandemic

IT services firms in India are likely to continue with their campus recruitment plans this year despite the Covid-19 crisis impacting their business. However, the hiring of experienced people will be done on ‘need basis.

While companies are looking at optimising cost by limiting lateral hiring, at the same time, they don’t want to miss out on the demand, which is expected to come back after the pandemic is contained. The implication of not having enough resources when the demand picks up is not seen as a good strategy. So, all big IT firms are reorienting their strategy to have enough freshers on a roll to meet any surge in demand,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, director and chief executive officer, CIEL HR Services.

Last year, TCS has made around 40,000 offers to fresh graduates, while Infosys has made 18,000 offers. Wipro has issued around 20,000 offer letters during this period.

Similarly, IT firms are expected to explore the option of replacing many mid-level positions with junior level employees or fresh engineering graduates by dividing the job role into pieces.

Transformation of the Indian IT Industry through the Decades

This remarkable transformation has mainly come about due to the dedicated effort of Millions of young professionals and the pioneers of the Indian IT Industry such as NR Narayana Murthy and Nandan Nilekani of Infosys, Azim Premji of Wipro, and the stalwarts in TCS or Tata Consultancy Services and other leading IT firms.

Indeed, these and other pioneers of IT Industry were instrumental in spearheading the software revolution at a time when the global headwinds were favorable as far as the willingness of Western firms to outsource their IT and Software requirements were concerned as well as due to the readily available pool of talented and skilled as well as qualified base of Engineers.

While the former was related to the globalization of the world economy and the concomitant willingness of the power elite in the West to look Eastward, the latter was mainly due to the deep base of educated Indians who, thanks to the efforts of leaders such as Nehru who setup the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and the RECs (Regional Engineering Colleges) were able to be trained in world class educational institutes.

Further, the Indian IT Industry also benefited from the convergence of globalization and the opening up of the Indian Economy so much so that it can be said that the pioneers of the Indian IT Industry were “in the right place at the right time” to take advantage of the global winds of change.

Storm Clouds on the Horizon and Turbulence Ahead: The Need for a Quantum Leap

Having said that, in recent years, the Indian IT Industry is being hit with turbulence mainly on account of the changing global economic and political landscape as well as to the very real aspect of the Industry reaching a saturation point in its business models and the nature of its work.

Moreover, the Indian IT Industry is yet to take the next “Quantum Leap” into higher value adding work in areas such as AI or Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and Robotics and this is the reason why there are some worries about the future directions of the industry.

As the United States under President Trump and the United Kingdom after Brexit, begin to look inward, chances are that Indian IT firms would have to rethink their business model of Onsite and offshore work since the former requires Visas for their employees which are becoming hard to come by.

Moreover, with the global economy yet to recover fully from the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, it is also the case that Western firms would prefer to not outsource their projects. Adding to this is the real competition from other low wage countries such as Philippines and China which are attempting to replicate the low cost, lower value adding work that many Indian IT firms specialize in.

From Snake Charmers to Mouse Charmers: The Changing Perceptions about Indian IT

It would not be an exaggeration to say that India is an IT (Information Technology) powerhouse. Indeed, the Indian IT Industry is globally recognized for its ability to get quality work done at competitive rates and for its efficiency in churning out Millions of Lines of Code within no time.

Further, the Indian IT Professionals have made a name for themselves worldwide with many of them migrating to the United States, Europe, and Australia to work in the software industries there.

Moreover, the fact that India, which was long associated with poverty and backwardness now boasts of a world class cutting edge IT Industry means that there has been a change in perceptions among Westerners as far as how they view India and Indians are concerned.

Indeed, for much of the last century and half, India was seen as a land of Snake Charmers and other exotic aspects and it was only during the 1980s and the 1990s wherein the accelerated development of the Indian IT Industry changed many views about the country and its people.

Thus, the title of case study is a play on old  and the new perceptions about India which has now emerged as a leading destination for outsourced work related to IT and software.

This is regarding CBSE circular of not permitting combination of Biology and Biotechnology at Senior Secondary level. This is an extremely popular and preferred combination with Biology students as Biotechnology help students of NEET, Biochemistry, Microbiology etc. in their further studies and expose them to various allied fields in biology. Also, Biology and Biotechnology syllabus do not overlap, instead supplement each other. Practicals in Biotechnology is further helping Biology students to have hands on experience, of what they are learning in theory. What is the rationale behind this decision?

Reply

1 Biotechnology was introduced by

the CBSE in the session 2002-2003

as an elective subject.

2 To promote Biotechnology, CBSE,

requested Medical Council of India

to consider Biotechnology in place

of Biology in the eligibility criteria

for admission in MBBS. This request

was accepted and eligibility criterion

for admission in MBBS was

amended by the Medical Council of

India.

3 In 2020, Biology has been offered

by 2,67,705 students and

Biotechnology by only 2727

students in class-XII. Only 873

students have offered Biology and

Biotechnology.

4 It is clear from the above data that

combination of Biology and

Biotechnology is not a popular

combination and decision taken by

CBSE will not create any issue for

the students who wish to offer

Biotechnology even now.

5 Further, no higher education

institution requires both Biology and

Biotechnology together be offered

at 10 2 to make them eligible for

any specific course.

Because maximum students study only for their final exams, can students of 9th and 11th grade also be promoted to next class, just like students of classes 1 to 8?

In Classes 9 and 11, there is a system of continuous internal assessment in most of the subjects by the schools. In addition, schools also conduct term exams at regular intervals in which the students are assessed. Hence the contention that maximum students study at the last moment for the final exams is not borne by facts.

Tough times do not last, but tough people do - Dr Sumit

Dear Friend,

Times of stress are also times that are signals for growth, and if we use adversity properly, we can grow through adversity.”
– Abraham Twerski

Today we all are facing an almost unprecedented situation in our lives. Of course, these kinds of situations may cause anxiety, stress, etc. But remember this is also the time when your patience, perseverance, self control, discipline, positive attitude, and commitment are very much required to sail through.

The Government Machinery is working round the clock, planning, and implementing various measures, and schemes for our well being. It’s the time, when we must support the Government directives.

I call upon you to utilize this time and do something productive for yourself and for your organization.  Do research, study online, practice, and hone your skills.

This is also the time when you spend more time with your family. Let this phase strengthen the bondings.

In these times, if you find someone needy, help them as per your capacity. Remember A good deed never goes in vain.

Last but not the least,  maintain social distancing, be alert to symptoms, meditate, and pray to Almighty for health to every soul.

Tough times do not last, but tough people do…

Together we will fight and will win this situation.

With best wishes and regards
